Historical Miniatures
These are Miniatures in our horses pedigrees. We feel very strongly that the horses behind in a pedigree influence the foals, and knowing the conformation of their ancestors can give us an idea of what to expect. We don't think foals have to be a 'surprise', but can be carefully-planned-for results. As we have so many historical pictures collected, we have seperated our Winks lined horses ancestors onto a different page. We hope you enjoy the photos and information on these two pages.

Landry's War Paint, AMHA top three halter stallion, sire of our Stormbringer and many top tens and better in halter and driving.

Shadow Oaks Cock Robin, sire of Landry's War Paint

Chianti, sire of Robin and famed progenator of many appaloosa lined miniatures. Chianti was a Falabella import.
I have not yet found pictures of Vanilla 3rd, dam of Cock Robin, or Dell Tera's Divine Miss M, dam of War Paint. These would be greatly appreciated if you have them! Vanilla 3rd was also the dam of Johnston's Vanilla, who is most well known for her son, Boone's Little Buckeroo. More on Vanilla 3rd below.

X'Caliber's Little Navajo, Grandsire of our Stormbringer. I have pics of Storm's dam but need to get my scanner working to upload them. This awesome stallion won 12 National Champion titles in halter, driving, and color, and also Reserve National Grand Champion Senior Stallion Open Halter. He has also gone on to SIRE them, as have his foals.

Bond Showboy, great foundation stallion, and grandsire of Navajo. This stallion also sired such well known's as Bond Snippet, Bond A Toy 4UC and Bond Peppy Power.

Chocolatico....Stormy's dam's bottom line traces to this foundation stallion. This picture I'm sure does NOT do him justice! This stallion's family linebreeds wonderfully, as is evidenced in the fact that his best progeny and grandget were intensely line bred. Those famed horses include Choco's Little Specks Red Boy, JJ's Little Macho, JJ's Little Buck, & Sooner States Bit O Honey to name a few. Also from this line come Mitzy's Trigger VB (sire of Red Boy), Burgher's Go Go Man (a full brother of Trigger and Storm's gt grandsire), Tiny Ted, Valley View Jet Stream, Ace of Spades VB, and many JJ's stallions and mares. His pedigree is unknown, however the family resemblance to the Silver Crescent line of Shetlands cannot be overlooked in our opinion. Many small line bred Shetlands of that blood were pictured in 50's and 60's Journals, ponies many inches under the men's belt lines, so we have our suspicions that this horse was line bred Silver Crescent, accounting for the intense silver coloring, the distinctive heads, and the fine bodys with strong bone that are predominant in the line.
Ok, back to Vanilla 3rd...to my knowledge there are no known photographs of this mare, or of her sire, Merry's Golden Mohawk or of her dam, Irene's Starlight. I have, however, collected a few photographs from further back into their Shetland blood. Mohawk was sired by a stallion named Euless Golden Flush. Flush was sired by the great Shetland stallion, Golden Boy Crescent. Irene's blood also went to the Crescent family if I'm recalling my research correctly.
Golden Boy was in turn sired by the great stallion, Billy Boy Crescent. I was once told by a Shetland historian that at a meeting of breeders in the 1950's, it was being debated whom the best Shetland stallion and mare were in the country. Many names were of course kicked about, strengths and weaknesses discussed of individuals and progeny (WOW, what has happened to that! We need to be aware of our horses limitations in order to better our own programs, and subsequently the breed as a whole!), and after much debate it was conceded that Billy Boy Crescent would carry the distinction of being "the Best" stallion in the USA. His full brother, Colonol Cody, carried highest honors in the official stallion rankings for many years, which were based solely on show results of direct get. Both of these great stallions were sired by Silver Crescent, out of a Silver Crescent daughter who was out of a King Larigo daughter. Streamliner's Kewpie Doll, by the way, was given the honor of best mare that year. I think? wonder? if this wasn't the seed of the "Pony of the Year" award beginning.
Pictured from left to right are Billy Boy, Colonol Cody, and Golden Boy

On left, Silver Crescent. On right, King Larigo. These two are THE foundations of today's American Shetland Pony, and consequently, American Miniature Horse. Their blood crossed very well together, and also on the Patton family (foundation line of Seth Thomas, Blue Boy, and the dam line on some of Colonol Cody's greatest sons) and the David Harum line. Both of these stallions were campaigned coast to coast back in the days when horses travelled by railroad to shows, and both were nearly undefeated. A story is told of Crescent getting off the train in CA, from out east, and sweeping every class entered at that show in harness, whether single or paired with his daughter, while in his early 20's. Please remember that back then there were no "Shetland" classes, let alone Shetland shows...there may have been other shetlands IN the class, but they showed I'm sure against all breeds. This was during the teens and 1920's. The only stallion to ever defeat King Larigo was a gorgeous blue roan named Locust, who's roots came from the same farm, and who was a Prince of Wales son.
Mohawks dam was a refined, delicate, gorgeous palomino mare named Golden Doll. I have a picture of this mare, and will post it when my scanner is working again. It is a sad point of history that this mare, along with many other pure shetlands of great form and blood, ended up dying at the killers when the market crashed around 1970. Many great bloodlines were completely lost, destroyed, during this period, with no trace of their existence today. The fortunate small Shetlands in some cases were renamed "American Miniature Horses" (they were often referred to before that as "midget shetlands"), shetland records destroyed to avoid association (and consequently pedigree proof lost), some animals themselves were given different names or abbreviated versions of former shetland names, new registries begun...and our breed was born.
But back to Golden Doll...Doll was a daughter of Realization, famed progenator of the palomino shetland. This stallion sired My Golden Toy, Ver Kens Golden Ken, Lightening Bug (sire of Gold Melody Boy) to name a few. Toy in turn sired Hash's Golden Comet and many others. Very little of this line is left in the Shetland breed, but there is some thankfully. And you can't be in Minis long without learning about Gold Melody Boy! As smallest of the Johnstons stallions at 33", he took the forefront while Comet and Mohawk quietly sired mares for him to breed. It was the combination of linebreeding these 3 stallions that niched and created what we know of as the Gold Melody bloodline today. Mohawks blood can still be found in the B&L shetlands, Mr Palomino Proud, and I believe the BarG Rock E dam's line. Comet's blood to my knowledge only exists in the Johnstons blooded Miniatures.
Back to more recent history though!

Bond Snippet, son of Bond Showboy and grandson of Bond Sir Galahad. Showboy is pictured above. We are very proud to have an own daughter of this elegant stallion in our program!

Bond Sir Galahad...Galahad sired some great sons, but he was an excellent broodmare sire! His daughters crossed very well with Showboy.

Bond Commander

FWF Little Boy Blue...this awesome stallion is the sire of our NFC's Blue Mist. Want Arabian look? Look for the Blue Boy line...

FWF Little Blue Boy, his sire. This line of Miniatures comes from the Patton family in Shetlands, begun by Black Patton. He sired an outstanding son named Silver White, who became the foundation of white (true grey) Shetlands. This small stallion stood at only 37" as a Shetland. He had a full brother in blood named The Greyhound. This family was crossed very successfully with the Crescent family, the Larigo family, and linebred wihtin itself wonderfully. Silver Manes favorite broodmare, Helen C, was by Silver White out of a daughter of The Greyhound. She and her mother basically made the Cody and the Silver Mane name by foaling top show foals, one after the other. To their credit is Mercury Cody, Meteor Cody, Comet Cody...Silver White was purchased by Richard Truenbach and linebred, and over the years the size came down, the line passed into the Ohio prefix, and we have the Blue Boy family.

Silver White
More will be added to this page as we build Storm's herd, and probably Jangles and Kernels, as they will need some outcross mares. Winks history, more Chocolatico history, more Shetland history, can be found on our Winks page.
